Five Oceans first wows an audience with the powerful vocals of lead singer Warren Hargraves. Hargraves’ voice features vintage-meets-modern charm, influenced as much by old school acts like The Allman Brothers and The Eagles as it is by current-day troubadours like Chris Stapleton and Anderson East. When first paired with the dynamic work of guitarist Josh Try (Stacey Kay, POESY, Patrick James Clark) in summer 2014, the high school friends knew they had captured something special. Try went to work finding a rhythm section capable of taking the pair to new heights, eventually recruiting two of the finest musicians he knew: bassist Pat Dal Cin (POESY, Tragedy Ann, Kincrest) and drummer Mark Swan (Stacey Kay, POESY, Ryan Creelman). Hargraves also recruited his uncle, accomplished saxophonist Creg Johnston (Soul Sausage, Brothers Inc, Chunk O’ Funk), to round out the lineup.
After releasing their début EP “From What You’ve Heard” in late 2015, Five Oceans continued to refine their live performance, capturing their energy and playfulness in a single: 2016’s “I’m Gone” (produced by Studio B’s Randy Rektor). A summer tour followed, seeing the band captivate audiences all over Southwestern Ontario while fine-tuning more new original material. In the fall/winter of 2016, the boys hunkered down with producer Alastair Sims to create “BROCEANS”, a memorable 3-song EP that showcases a tremendous amount of growth from the five-piece. “BROCEANS” combines sophisticated guitar textures, snappy horn shots, and infectious rhythms with Hargraves’ trademark growl to create a truly unique blend of country, rock, and soul. Shortly before the EP’s release, Five Oceans took home the top prize at Prevail Media’s #StartYourJRNY contest and have remained hard at work writing and tracking new material while lining up a spotlight appearance at London’s Rock The Park festival. Additionally, a headlining slot at London’s Sesquicentennial celebrations (SesquiFest) saw Five Oceans excite fans with an incendiary performance.
All told, Five Oceans have shared the stage with heavyweight acts like Arkells, The Darcys, Hollerado, Genevieve Fisher, and Gord Bamford, with members’ various other projects seeing them travel internationally to work alongside premiere talent like Brothers Osborne, Brett Kissel, Repartee, and Alan Frew. While the band always has lots on their plate, they are tireless workers always searching for the next opportunity to share their passionate, energetic, and one-of-a-kind live show.
